It probably WOULD go more quickly if I plugged numbers into Excel, wrote a couple of simple equations, and hit "enter," but . . .
1. I hate flipping back and forth between Excel pages. If I calculate on paper, I can keep the pertinent data on the computer screen and just glance up at what I need.
2. It's actually a fairly simple statistic to calculate.
3. Calculating the statistic by hand actually helps me understand what it means. This understanding, methinks, will come in handy when I go write up the data in the manuscript.
4. Writing keeps my fingers "agile" and able to work properly.

OR You just like showing off! What did you think about HP???????
Sarah -- If I wanted to show off, dear, I'd do a complete ANOVA with about 50 data points or something. A G test is hardly showing off.
I'll discuss HP later. What did YOU think?
I think HP deserves an entire blog....so quit being a slacker and get to it!
